Sassanelli translates to 'little rocks' in Italian, but these cookies are anything but! Chocolate, almonds and lemon zest flavour these little cookies, enjoyed round Christmas and the winter holidays. Another special ingredient is vincotto, a traditional sweet wine, but you can use port if vincotto is unavailable.

4 people made this

IngredientsMakes: 4 to 5 dozen

  • 200g almonds
  • 1kg plain flour
  • 300ml vincotto, or a sweet wine as port
  • zest of 2 lemons
  • 50g cocoa powder
  • 300g caster sugar
  • 200g olive oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 20g baker's ammonia
  • 1 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

MethodPrep:40min ›Cook:10min ›Ready in:50min

  1. Toast the almonds: Preheat the oven 150 C / Gas 2 and line a baking tray with parchment. Place the almonds on the tray, spreading evenly.
  2. Bake in the preheated oven about 15 minutes or until toasted. Remove from the oven, cool and chop finely with a mixer.
  3. Set oven to 200 C / Gas 6. Line a baking tray with parchment.
  4. Place the flour in a large bowl and pour in half of the vincotto, a bit at the time. Stir and mix to make a wet and sticky dough. Fold in the almonds, lemon zest, cocoa, sugar, oil and vanilla.
  5. Warm up the remaining vincotto and add the baker's ammonia to dissolve. Add to the mix with cinnamon and cloves. Knead for few minutes (it will still be a sticky dough), then shape into oval balls that resemble little rocks. Transfer to the tray, set 4 to 5cm apart from one another.
  6. Bake in the preheated oven for 10 minutes. Remove from the oven and cool. Serve as small treat with espresso.

Ammonia

Used as a leavening agent before baking powder and bicarbonate of soda was available, ammonia is still used in some traditional recipes around the world. If you can't get your hands on it, for this recipe use 2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder OR 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder and 1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda.

Italian Christmas Cookies

These Italian Christmas cookies have become a favorite Christmas recipe at our house. Try them and see for yourself how delicious they are!

H as the Christmas fever started shaking you?
I’m burning! More specifically, I’m burning, because I want everything, but I’m managing to finish nothing. I have xx tabs opened with recipes that I want to prepare, eat, erase from the “to do” list because it isn’t good to transfer all of that into the New Year, right ?

But it’s just not happening the way I would like … and this terrible weather! I’m waiting for noon to begin to take photos, the closer the time, the darker it becomes. I’ll never get used to winter time.

Soooo, back to today sweet treat.

One part of the Christmas and New Year’s magic, which gives a special flavor to the holidays is certainly – cookies. Easy to prepare, these colorful cookies, crunchy outside and incredibly soft inside, are an unavoidable and very popular part of the Italian festive cuisine. Their lightly sweet taste is again as most Italian cookies, perfect for dipping in espresso….or wine!

Italian Christmas Cookies Recipe

Baking and handing out holiday treats is one of my favorite Christmas traditions. Chocolate Chip Cookie Sticks and Oreo Mint Chocolate Cookies are two of my favorites. They look festive, and are so tasty!

Before making these cookies, I had never tried an Italian cookie before. I know I&rsquom in the minority, but I&rsquom not a fan of sprinkles. (Don&rsquot hate me.) They are so cute, but I don&rsquot like biting into them. My kids, on the other hand, LOVE sprinkles, so they thought these cookies were the bomb!

Traditional Italian cookies are made with anise flavoring. But since everyone in my house detests black licorice, I opted to use almond extract instead. I made a couple cookies for myself without sprinkles, and I thought it was a perfect flavor!

With a soft, cake like texture, plenty of sweet glaze, and a spattering of colorful sprinkles, these cookies will disappear fast!

How to make Italian Christmas Cookies:

  • eggs
  • oil (I used vegetable oil)
  • sugar
  • anise, almond, or vanilla extract
  • all purpose flour
  • baking powder
  • salt
  • powdered sugar
  • cream or milk (any type of cream, I used half & half)

Whisk together the eggs, oil, sugar, and extract in a mixing bowl. Stir in the dry ingredients.

Scoop dough with a cookie scoop, then roll dough into balls.

Chill them for about an hour, or place them in the freezer for 15 minutes. They will settle a little bit because the dough is fairly soft.

Bake the cold cookie dough balls at 350° for about 9 minutes, or till the bottoms are lightly brown and the tops are set. Remove to wire racks to cool.

After the cookies are completely cooled, whip up a simple glaze by whisking together powdered sugar, a pinch of salt, extract of your choice, and warmed milk or cream.

Dip the tops of the cookies into the glaze, then quickly add sprinkles before the glaze sets up.

This recipe makes about 30 cookies, but it can easily be doubled.

-For the prettiest cookies, don&rsquot skip the chilling step. Chilling the dough helps the cookies keep their round shape. Without chilling, they tend to spread.

-To assure that the cookies are similar sized and bake evenly, I like to use a small cookie scoop. After scooping, I roll them into balls.

-Don&rsquot over bake, or the cookies will be dry and crumbly. They are done when the tops are set, they will continue to cook a bit after you take them out of the oven.

While these cookies are perfect for Christmas, you can change up the colors of sprinkles to match any holiday or celebration.

How to store Italian Cookies

The cookies are best eaten within a day or two after they are glazed. After that the color from the sprinkles starts to bleed. Store them in airtight containers at room temperature. I like to put a piece of waxed paper between layers so the glaze and sprinkles stay intact.

If you want to make them ahead of time, you can freeze them without the glaze, and add it the day you serve them.

No matter what time of year you make these cookies, they are sure to be a hit!

Recreating Grandma Minnie's Mountains of Italian Christmas Cookies

These six cookies bring me back to Worcester, Massachusetts, circa 1988, with Duraflame logs in the fireplace and Mitch Miller booming from the turntable. Velour couches, candy bowls full of Hershey’s Kisses, gallon jugs of my grandfather’s punchy basement Zinfandel, and a china cabinet that rattled so loudly my cousins and I would compete to see who could set it rocking and tittering the most when running past.

My grandmother, Erminia “Minnie” Morocco, treated cookies like a form of currency. She was obsessed with counting everything and anything she made. “145 biscotti this year!” she would bellow. “204 pizzettes!” They were currency to her kids and grandkids as well. A few Ziploc bags of her cookies in the freezer could get us through the holidays and well into the New Year when rationed carefully. Chewy-soft molasses-y hermit slices with the faintest sheen of browned butter glaze. Pizzettes, whose strange name has always been synonymous with the chocolate, spice, and citrus flavors that simply meant Christmas to us Italians. Her spritz cookies were buttery magic to me, miracles of uniformity and green sprinkles, the gateway cookie that I fell for as soon as I could eat solid food. Most were served by the hundreds if not thousands at every major family event I can think of, piled in tiers on banquet tables and protected from premature eating by elaborate ruffles of bound plastic wrap. They were there for as long as I could remember. Until they weren’t.

The name pizzelle comes from the Italian word "pizze" for round and flat. These cookies are a winter holiday staple in every Italian family, because they are shaped like snowflakes and are dusted in powdered sugar. The traditional (and best) kind should be crisp and paper-thin. You must have a pizzelle iron to make them.

Made by stacking three separate thin cakes with a layer of raspberry jam, rainbow cookies get their distinct taste and texture from dough that&aposs made with flour and almond paste.

These horseshoe-shaped cookies are delicious and naturally gluten free -- they are made from marzipan, almond meal, and sugar, rolled in sliced almond and the ends are dipped in chocolate. Bonus: They&aposre one of the easiest cookies to make. Once you see how easy these are to make, you&aposll never want to buy them out again.

These doable cookies are one of our all-time favorites. With a stick of butter mixed into the flour (hence the name), and rolled in powdered sugar, they have a distinct toothiness that makes it impossible to eat just one.

Whether you like them with pistachios, chocolate chips, or just plain -- is there any cookie more quintessentially Italian than a biscotto? Try this version with lavender and orange for a twist on the classic.

Pignoli (pine nut) cookies -- a macaroon typical of Sicily -- are one of our favorites. Slightly more moist than biscotti, with a similar buttery and nutty taste, pignoli are at their prime alongside a hot cup of espresso.

These cake-like confections come in two forms: balls dipped in icing and sprinkles, and a long, curved version, affectionately called "S" cookies. Anise extract gives them a distinct, not overpowering, taste (even those who don&apost like licorice usually like these).

Christmas Italian Ribbon Cookies Recipe Idea (VIDEO)

Many thanks to my mom for helping bring this holiday recipe for “Mom’s Italian Ribbon Christmas Cookies” to see the light of Christmas day. Throw a log on the fire, turn on the Christmas music and pour yourself a glass of egg nog. This is going to be a new Christmas tradition recipe in your family. And this is not a quick and easy recipe. This is a recipe is a great excuse to spend the day with the family, enjoying each other and getting in the spirit. If you want to make a smaller batch, cut everything in half.

My mother has been making this recipe forever but none of us ever took the opportunity to watch the whole process from start to finish. And, honestly, you would have to be a pretty skilled mind reader to decipher her recipe card and make these cookies without her by your side. My mom’s a great cook and a great baker, so she’s done most of her cooking and baking by pinching, eye-ing and guessing food into existence, without much measuring if any. Somehow, it always works. For the sake of everyone else in our family and for the rest of the world, John and I spent a full Sunday with my Mom and Dad and transcribed the entire recipe in writing, pictures and (coming soon) video.

Ingredients for Cookies: 2 pounds flour (buy in 2 pound bag) or 6 and 2/3 cups ½ cup sugar ½ cup canola oil canola oil for frying (check this) 8 large eggs 3 and ½ tablespoons baking powder 1 tsp. salt

Ingredients to Drizzle After Cooking 2-3 cups honey Powdered sugar shaker

RECIPE NOTES

  • This is the perfect edible gift recipe this holiday season! Sprinkle festive sprinkles over the top and place them in a transparent gift bag with a festive bow.
  • If you desire that anise flavoring that some recipes include, add 1/2 teaspoon anise extract along with the rest of the wet ingredients.
  • These cookies cook quickly! My oven produces the perfect cookie in just 8 minutes. When you peek in, they may not appear to be fully baked. If you see a very slightly golden tint around the bottom edge of the cookies, pull them out! When you flip a cookie over you will see a golden brown ring on the bottom sides of the cookies.
  • Store these in the fridge for up to 1 week.

Making Italian Christmas Cookies has become a regular family tradition. The first time I made these cookies for Grumpy, he fell in love with them! He is a sucker for a cookie that you don't have to crunch through. These cookies are soft and have that buttery almond flavor that we love so much.

The rest of my family also fell in love with this cookie recipe. I became the go-to person for Italian Christmas Cookies anytime someone wanted a large batch for a party. They would call and ask me to make them for them!

Step 1

Cream butter and sugar, beat in eggs add vanilla and dry ingredients.

Knead and add flour as needed to keep dough from sticking to hands. Pinch off dough, roll in your hands to form a log and then twirl into shape. Place on greased cookie sheets.

Bake at 375°F for 10 minutes.

Icing: Mix until creamy, 2 cups sifted confectioner’s sugar 2 teaspoons vanilla 6 teaspoons water.

Dip cookies into icing and sprinkle with trim.

Place on wire rack with wax paper on counter to collect the dripping icing and sprinkles.
